1 · Overview

Stylized Folder is a lightweight Unity Editor extension by Zant Assets that lets you visually organize your Project window and Hierarchy by assigning custom icon colors, name highlight colors, and emoji badges to any folder, script, prefab, scene, or other asset — without touching a single line of code.

✓

Works on any asset type

Folders, scripts, prefabs, scenes, audio clips, textures, and more.

✓

Project & Hierarchy support

Style both Project window assets and scene GameObjects in the Hierarchy.

✓

Child style inheritance

Propagate a parent's style to all child folders automatically.

✓

Non-destructive

All styles are stored in a JSON file — no asset files are modified.

2 · Opening the Stylized Folder Window

There are two ways to open the Stylized Folder editor window:

Method A — Right-Click any asset or folder

Right-click on any folder, file, or asset in the Project window or right-click any GameObject in the Hierarchy window, then choose:

The window opens automatically targeting the item you right-clicked.

Method B — Click any asset, then open via Window menu

Select an asset first, then navigate to the top menu:

💡

The window stays open as you click different assets. It automatically switches to show and edit the currently selected asset — no need to reopen it every time.

3 · The Editor Window — Interface Tour

Figure 1 — The Stylized Folder window with Color, Highlight, Emoji, and Options sections visible. The Project window (left) shows the Audio folder colored red with an emoji badge.

The window is divided into five areas:

AreaPurpose
📋 Copy Style / 📌 Paste StyleCopy the full style of the current asset and paste it onto another
🖌️ ColorTint the asset's icon with any colour
💡 HighlightDraw a coloured band behind the asset's label in list views
😄 EmojiOverlay an emoji or Unity built-in icon badge on the asset icon
⚙️ OptionsPer-asset visibility toggles and child-folder inheritance

The header always shows the name and type of the asset being edited (e.g. Editing: Audio (Project Asset) or Editing: Main Camera (Scene GameObject (SampleScene))).

4 · Setting an Icon Color

The Color section lets you tint the asset's icon with a fully custom colour. This is visible in both list view and large-icon grid view in the Project window.

How to set it

Click the colour swatch next to Icon Color. Unity's standard colour picker opens. Choose any colour — the icon in the Project window updates in real time.

Figure 2 — The Audio folder is tinted red, and a yellow highlight band appears behind its name.

Undo & Clear

  • ↩ Undo — Reverts to the colour the asset had when the window was last opened for it.
  • ❌ Clear — Removes the icon colour entirely, restoring the default Unity appearance. This button only appears when a colour is set.
✅

A common convention is to use warm colours (red, orange) for high-priority folders and cool colours (blue, teal) for reference or read-only folders.

5 · Setting a Highlight Color

The Highlight section draws a coloured background strip behind the asset's name text in list-view and one-column view. The text colour is automatically adjusted to remain readable (dark text on light highlights, white text on dark highlights).

How to set it

Click the colour swatch next to Highlight Color. The alpha (A) channel controls opacity — lower alpha produces a subtle tint, higher alpha produces a strong band. The default opacity is 15%.

Figure 3 — Yellow-green highlight behind the Audio folder label in list view.

Undo & Clear

  • ↩ Undo — Reverts to the highlight colour from when the window was opened.
  • ❌ Clear — Removes the highlight; the label reverts to the standard Unity style.

6 · Adding an Emoji

Any asset can have a small emoji badge overlaid on its icon. In list view the emoji appears at the far-right of the row. In large-icon grid view it is displayed in the bottom-right corner of the icon.

Figure 4 — The Audio folder shows a 😉 emoji badge both in grid view (large icon) and list view (right edge).

Picking an Emoji

Click the 🔍 Pick Emoji button. The built-in Emoji Picker window opens with the following categories:

  • 😀 Smileys & Emotion
  • 🤚 Hand Gestures
  • 👨 People
  • 🐶 Animals
  • 🌿 Plants & Nature
  • 🍎 Food & Drink
  • 🚗 Travel & Places
  • ⚽ Activities & Sports
  • 📱 Objects & Tools
  • 📝 Office & Writing
  • ❤️ Symbols

Scroll through the grid and click any emoji to apply it instantly. You can also choose Unity built-in icons (e.g. camera, light, audio icons) from the picker.

Undo & Clear

  • ↩ Undo — Reverts to the emoji the asset had when the window was opened.
  • ❌ Clear — Removes the emoji badge.

7 · Per-Asset Options & Child Inheritance

The ⚙️ Options section provides three visibility toggles and one inheritance toggle, all scoped to the currently selected asset.

ToggleEffect
Show Color for this assetHide/show the icon colour tint without deleting it
Show Highlight for this assetHide/show the highlight band without deleting it
Show Emoji for this assetHide/show the emoji badge without deleting it

Apply Style to Child Folders

Figure 5 — The Music folder has "Apply style to child folders" enabled. Its pink colour and guitar emoji are inherited by the "New Folder" child. The Music folder itself also displays a cyan highlight.

📂 Apply style to child folders (without overriding their own)

When this toggle is enabled, all child folders/assets that do not have their own style will inherit this folder's colour, highlight, and emoji. Children with their own explicit style are never overridden — the inheritance is purely additive.

✅

Use this for top-level organisational folders such as Assets/Art or Assets/Audio to automatically colour all sub-folders that haven't been individually styled.

8 · Styling Hierarchy GameObjects

Figure 6 — The "Main Camera" GameObject in the Hierarchy is styled with a yellow icon colour and a camera 📷 emoji. The change is reflected both in the Hierarchy list and the Project window.

Stylized Folder works identically for scene GameObjects in the Hierarchy window. Right-click any GameObject → 🌈 Stylized Folder to open the window targeting that object.

  • The header will show Editing: <ObjectName> (Scene GameObject (<SceneName>)).
  • Icon colours, highlights, and emojis all render directly in the Hierarchy list.
  • Hierarchy styles are stored by scene name + object name, so renaming an object resets its style.
  • Child inheritance also works in the Hierarchy — enable the toggle and all child GameObjects without their own style will inherit the parent's look.
💡

Hierarchy styling is great for distinguishing manager objects, cameras, lighting rigs, or organisational empty GameObjects from regular scene content.

9 · Copy & Paste Style

The 📋 Copy Style and 📌 Paste Style buttons at the top of the window let you rapidly apply the same look to multiple assets.

1

Select source asset

Click the folder or asset whose style you want to copy.

2

Click "📋 Copy Style"

This captures the current colour, highlight, and emoji into an internal clipboard.

3

Select target asset

Click any other folder, file, or GameObject you want to style.

4

Click "📌 Paste Style"

The full style — colour, highlight, and emoji — is applied immediately.

💡

The clipboard persists for the entire Editor session. You can paste the same style onto as many assets as you like without copying again.

10 · Works on Any File Type

Figure 7 — A non-folder asset (InputSystem_Actions.inputactions) styled with a purple icon colour and a game-controller emoji. The large icon in the Project window shows the customisation clearly.

Stylized Folder is not limited to folders. You can apply custom styles to any asset in your project:

  • C# scripts (.cs)
  • Prefabs (.prefab)
  • Scenes (.unity)
  • Textures, sprites, and atlases
  • Audio clips (.wav, .mp3, …)
  • Input Actions (.inputactions)
  • ScriptableObjects and custom assets
  • Any other file recognised by Unity's asset pipeline

11 · Global Settings & Data Storage

Global visibility toggles

Three global flags control whether colours, highlights, and emojis are rendered across the entire project, regardless of individual asset settings:

SettingDefaultEffect when disabled
globalShowColorsOnAll icon colour tints are hidden project-wide
globalShowHighlightOnAll highlight bands are hidden project-wide
globalShowEmojisOnAll emoji badges are hidden project-wide

Where is the data saved?

All style data is persisted in a single human-readable JSON file located at:

This file is created automatically the first time you apply a style. Commit it to version control to share styles with your team. The file stores each asset's path, icon colour, highlight colour, emoji, visibility flags, and child-inheritance setting.

✅

Because styles are stored by asset path (not GUID), renaming or moving an asset will cause its style to be lost. Re-apply the style after any rename.
